SAUNDERS ENGINEERING Co.
Kilkenny, South Australia manufacturer. Previously known as SPEEDY WINDMILL Co. John Henry SAUNDERS was the director of the company who had fifteen patents, mainly for windmills and pumps, dating between 1906 and 1932. The company failed in the early 1940's after John Henry SAUNDERS was killed in a car accident in January 1939.
- ACE GEARED WINDMILL Available in 5 sizes. 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 ft windwheels.
- ACE GEARLESS WINDMILL Available in 2 sizes. 6 and 7ft windwheels.
- ALERT WINDMILL The Alert was made in windwheel sizes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, & 14ft with a choice of 20ft or 30ft towers. It was a geared, fully enclosed, oilbath mill that was self governing. The company also made an Alert Pumping Gear which was constructed on the same principles as the Alert windmill head.
- CROWN WINDMILL Available in two sizes. It was a double geared oil bath windmill. Ball bearing tower fittings were used. An advertising brochure c1930 describes it as a direct acting oilbath mill in sizes 18 to 24 ft windwheels.
- SPEEDY WINDMILL The Speedy windmill was successfully marketed within South Australia and interstate. It was said to be made in a range of sizes but the only definite sizes found in advertising have been 7ft, 8ft and 12ft. A tower size of 21ft was given with the 7ft mill and 25ft with the 8ft mill. It had an open gear head with a patented quick return cam action.
- STANDARD WINDMILL c1929 - early 1940's. First prize winner at the 1929 Royal Show Adelaide, South Australia, for Best Self-Oiling windmill. Double geared oil bath windmill which could be fitted to 3 or 4 post towers on a ball bearing tower cap. Eight sizes available. An advertising brochure c1930 depicted a diagram of the 8ft gearbox and testimonies from Mr George Tilley of Sturt and Mr G.A. Stacey of Normanville waxed eloquent on the virtues of the 14 ft model. An expanding hub brake was used and the crosshead was guided by a single bar with stay bolt.
- VICTOR WINDMILL Available in 2 sizes. 5 & 6ft windwheels. A self governing oilbath mill which could be fitted to 3 or 4 legged towers on a ball bearing tower cap. It could also be fitted onto a post.
- STANDARD LIGHT WIND GENERATOR In 1935 they displayed two models of the Standard Light at the Adelaide Show. These were a direct driven model offered in 12 and 32 volts, and a gear driven model in 32, 50 and 110 volts. They had a four-bladed propeller of 11ft or 12ft diameter. Advertising for these machines appears in newspapers between 1933 and 1939. There was also a two-bladed propeller version advertised in 1937.
SAUNDERS AND STUART

SCOTT & YOUNG
Windmill manufacturer of Carlton, Victoria who manufactured windmills 1891 - 1894.
In 1887 Scott & Young, Atlas Company of Engineers, Latrobe and Queen Streets, Melbourne, also advertised an Althouse windmill, but they claimed to be the patentees and sole manufacturers. They offered the windmill with a choice of the stock sizes ten, twelve, fourteen and sixteen foot plus the stated that that larger sizes could be made on demand. Their advertising shows a tower platform with Althouse written on it, and what appears to be a Raymond windmill. It is possible that they may have had an arrangement with the American company.
SHARP, Henry William
Patented a self regulating windmill on 26th February 1864 in NSW, patent no. 89. Sharp's windmills were known to be used on the properties Stony Point and Jellalabad, near Darlington in Western Victoria, circa 1880.

SOUTHERN CROSS MACHINERY LTD.
c1903 - 1994. In 1901 The TOOWOOMBA FOUNDRY began making well drilling equipment labelled as SOUTHERN CROSS equipment. Then in c1902 Bert GRIFFITHS designed and manufactured the first SOUTHERN CROSS Windmill. This and the well drilling equipment soon earned a reputation for strength and effective operation, thus the trade name SOUTHERN CROSS was adopted by the TOOWOOMBA FOUNDRY in 1911. They had however applied for the trademark in 1906. The company that until this time had marketed its products through mail order catalogues, established sales branches to ensure factory capacity was maintained and increased. These branches were staffed by factory trained representatives, who called on landholders to sell SOUTHERN CROSS Products. In 1925 they amalgamated with the ECLIPSE Windmill Company. Documented cases of the company exporting its products were recorded in 1939. Natcorp Investments Ltd, a publicly listed investment company, took a 49% interest in SOUTHERN CROSS in 1987. Until that time ownership remained wholly with the GRIFFITHS family. In 1990 SOUTHERN CROSS became a wholly owned subsidiary of National Consolidated Ltd. Then in May 1993 the foundry was separated from the pumps and irrigation business, the latter being sold to a management buy-out of the branch and agency network, manufacturing assets including the non-ferrous foundry, the fabricating, galvanising and assembly operations plus the National Distribution Warehouse. On the 31st January 1994, SOUTHERN CROSS MACHINERY PTY LTD was renamed SOUTHERN CROSS PUMPS and IRRIGATION PTY LTD.
SOUTHERN CROSS PUMPS AND IRRIGATION LTD
1994 - On the 31st January 1994, SOUTHERN CROSS MACHINERY PTY LTD was renamed SOUTHERN CROSS PUMPS and IRRIGATION PTY LTD. In December 1996 A.M.P., Australia's leading non-bank finance company, purchased 46% of SOUTHERN CROSS. The retail branches of the company throughout Australia were sold to private operators in the irrigation and pumping industry, allowing SOUTHERN CROSS to focus on product development, manufacture and wholesale distribution.
